How Does the SWR Affect Weld Quality and Consistency?

To improve weld quality and shop productivity, many fabricators in the global market have resorted to automation. For pipe spool welding, this can be achieved by using collaborative robots, such as the Spool Welding Robot (SWR), that meet the quality standards set by the pressure welding codes (such as ASME B31.1 and B31.3).

In this blog post, we are going to dive into more detail on how the SWR can have significant impact on the weld quality and consistency.

Full Control over all Welding Parameters

One major challenge with manual (semi-automatic) welding is that it is nearly impossible to change weld parameters during the weld. As any good welder knows, every time you have to stop and start again, there is a risk for a defect in the weld. This risk is instantly diminished with the SWR as it allows a less experienced welder to have full control over all welding parameters, and instantly change the parameters during the weld. The SWR lets you weld the joint from root to cap, switching between weld modes without shutting off the arc, and therefore increase the overall quality and consistency of your welds.

Ability to See How Much Reinforcement is Being Used

With the SWR and the NovEye, the operator can see how much reinforcement is being put in to the root of the weld at all times. This removes a lot of frustration and stress on the welder and also eliminates the need for repair work, which is a costly process for shops. By pairing a less experienced welder to operate the SWR, fabrication shops can have defect rates lower than 1%.

Reduces Human Error

Humans are prone to error, and manually producing repeatable and consistent high-quality welds has proven to be extremely difficult. Weld consistency typically deteriorates during an 8 hour shift as welders become tired. If your company struggles with creating consistent quality welds, then the SWR can be a major benefit. The SWR is able to control weld parameters by taking the torch out of the welders’ hands, and therefore repeatedly create high-quality welds.

What our customers have found is that with proper training and adequate welding knowledge, they have achieved nearly 100% RT (Radiographic Test) passing rate. As you can see, the SWR allows shops to consistently produce high quality welds as it allows the operator to have full control over all welding parameters and see how much reinforcement is being used.
