From an “on the steel” job to a “growth mindset” career
A rare opportunity to work on industrial robots and integrate robotic technology with Novarc’s AI and proprietary control software = career progression:
"She's had the wind at her back": the journey of one of Novarc's first employees
A move to a new country, and a new career, ignites a new passion for work:
How Novarc has become a career “sweet spot”
Director of Welding Operations
In December, 2019, Jamie Sison’s career took a dramatic turn when he decided to apply to Novarc for a position as Shop Hand. He had spent the previous 10 years as a certified Red Seal Endorsed/Journeyman Welder working manually “on the steel”, but he was hungry for a challenge that not only opened doors to different opportunities, but also brought him, in his words, “ out of the rain.” He took a deep breath, and made the leap. Five years later, while working his way from Novarc Shop Hand to Weld Technician, Shop Manager, Welding Operations Manager and today, Director of Welding Operations, Jamie hasn’t looked back. “From the start, the job seemed so different to what I would be doing as a welder in the field. At first, it was quite intimidating. Working with engineers in an environment that was completely different to any other welding shop. Out in the field, I found myself meeting a lot of different people from different disciplines. And I have the responsibility of teaching others how to work with some of the most advanced technology in welding. You learn how to engage with people from a lot of different disciplines, both the teams you work with internally at Novarc, and our clients. I never saw myself as much of a teacher, but with the internal support you get at Novarc, it’s one of the most rewarding parts of my responsibilities today. “You learn something new all the time, and being part of a team with other supporting units, the personal rewards are great. I look back today and I’m honestly amazed at how my career has developed. And that trajectory has completely surpassed my expectations. “Changes that come up in the field are a big part of developing my skill set. For example, going global has been insanely interesting, where you’re part of a multi-talented group working together to find solutions to challenges. What really stands out is how supportive that community is within Novarc. You learn that all you have to do is ask a question and they’ll try to find an answer for you. You’re constantly gaining knowledge, growing in your career, and that’s a good feeling.” Away from work, Jamie uses his free time to “get lost” on his motorcycle, as well as camping, fishing and trying to develop his skills in the kitchen. “To be honest, there are times I miss the risky stuff, being “on the steel” hundreds of feet in the air, but the rewards at Novarc, personally and professionally, bring me down to earth.”
Control Systems Specialist
Having joined Novarc in September 2023, it didn’t take Leon Choe long to settle into his experience in Canada, in Vancouver, and in Novarc, as Control Systems Specialist on the Innovation Team. He received his degree in Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, then spent a number of years as a Controls and Automation Engineer with a large, global medical device manufacturer. While reviewing employment opportunities in Canada, he saw opportunity in Novarc’s innovative technology and their success in achieving ground-breaking solutions for an interesting industry. He decided to make the leap. “I started my first day meeting HR, and after introductions to a number of staff, I began to realize that my first adjustment would be going from a company with thousands of employees to what seemed like a much smaller enterprise. But I soon realized that with fewer employees, there were fewer hurdles to jump over. When I want to implement an idea, I can go directly to my manager, or even to the top, and everyone is willing to listen. There’s a much more communal feel as opposed to a large, more anonymous corporate environment. “The change to welding technology, and the welding industry in general, was quite a challenge. I’m still learning welding terminology and processes. But at Novarc we have such a wealth of knowledge in software, AI, machine learning and data sciences and I’ve had a lot of help from the welders in the shop, and the software engineers developing the AI and machine learning tools. It’s a very collaborative environment, and they’ve all taught me a lot in a relatively short period of time. So with that pool of knowledge and a real willingness to share that knowledge, a smaller shop may well offer bigger opportunities. “In terms of career progression, there are so many opportunities at Novarc, and I really have been able to find my niche. The chance to work on industrial robots and integrate robotic technology with Novarc’s AI and proprietary control software has been so exciting on the technical side, but also on the collaborative side working with an experienced Novarc robotics technician with an in-depth knowledge of robots, as well as working alongside my colleagues in the Controls Team. It’s a fun, collaborative process and I’ve had the chance to learn and share my experience as well.” The social events that Novarc hosts regularly also contribute to an increasing comfort level for Leon within Novarc. “The holiday party stands out because it included the whole company. Even the tone of Soroush’s message felt like a nice, sincere ‘Thank You’ to everyone. It helps contribute to a real ‘work hard-play hard’ life balance.” “Novarc is incorporating the technology of machine learning, modern software, and artificial intelligence with robotics and welding. I don’t think many companies have that marriage of technology in a traditional field like welding. And that’s really exciting!”
Senior Account Executive; Europe, Middle East & Africa
What does a young Irish woman do after earning her Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources? Well, move to Vancouver Canada, of course. With their newly minted degrees in hand, Nikita Telford and a few friends decided to do just that. After a short stint at Microsoft, Nikita answered an ad for Receptionist and became employee #8 at Novarc in May 2016. Being one of the only non-engineers, Nikita took on a number of assorted roles, one of which was making up to 50 cold-calls a day for sales. By January 2018, Nikita’s interest in and talent for developing leads resulted in a Sales Associate title. And a year later, a full-fledged Sales Representative. “I was lucky to have that early environment because you end up doing a bit of everything. I was exposed to a number of different avenues of the company and the robotics field. It was a ‘learn as you go’ opportunity to build my knowledge base with tremendous support from people like Ringo (Gonzalez), Director of Welding Innovations, and of course, incredibly helpful mentoring from Soroush (Karimzadeh), our CEO. “As Novarc Account Executive for the Pacific/Northwest region, I was literally growing with the company as we saw our North American market develop. Today, as Senior Account Executive for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, we’re at that very exciting development stage in Europe.” Nikita credits Novarc’s close, tightly knit team approach. Unlike many other technology driven companies, Novarc’s Sales and Marketing group work together with a common purpose. “The people are great - on both the Novarc and industry side. I find that 99% of the people we sell to are just like us - trying to build a business - and the interaction that results is incredible. For an Irish girl, it’s honestly heartwarming.” Now working remotely back in Ireland with only 2 hours of office time crossover with Vancouver, Nikita does miss the in-person contact with other Novarc staff. But sharing the occasional coffee online, and access to video of events and sessions ensures a continuing link with Novarc’s strong corporate culture. “We have a very, very interesting product and I learn something new every day. I’m constantly trying to improve in whatever way I can so there’s never a dull day.”
Quality Assurance Tester
In June 2022, after following a friend’s recommendation to explore a one-year online certification in Quality Assurance, Roxana Pistol began a three-month co-op placement at Novarc. That co-op was key to receiving a full-time position in Quality Assurance. But it was hardly her first experience within academia. Roxana received a Bachelor's Degree, followed by a Master’s Degree in Philosophy in her native Romania. Then halfway through her Doctorate, Roxana realized that she had reached the end of that road and decided, “That’s it, I’m done.” The young family moved to Germany and while Roxana was settling into the role of stay at home mum, her husband accepted an opportunity to further his career in software development, and they were on the road to Vancouver, Canada. “On my first day at Novarc, I was so nervous. It was a brand new field for me, and incredibly stressful. I don’t think the team had much hope for me but they were awesome. At first, I was on the software team but soon moved to the product team where testing made more sense. QA involves everything from software to hardware and controls, so when I’m not behind my laptop, most of my day is spent with the welding team. “Everyone is interested in developing new products but you have to pause and consider product requirements, and that’s where testing comes in. We just spent a nerve-wracking day beta testing on the client side because you never know what will happen in the field. But when they actually started to use the new software in production, it worked! I felt very proud of myself, my team, and Novarc. It made my day.” Roxana feels this kind of positive, encouraging and rewarding environment is contagious. “People are so supportive, and there’s always an open door. When I mentioned an interest in attending Product Management classes, they just said ‘Go for it.’ That’s the kind of corporate response that has Roxana feeling that “I can grow here, get more involved. I can keep up the momentum in my career.”
Director of Engineering
When Tevor Dunnett recounts his career path, one word crops up often: Passion. After completing a science-based education at the University of British Columbia, Trevor earned a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Design at BCIT. With those credentials tucked under his arm, Trevor started his career at General Fusion, the only R&D enterprise of its kind in North America, applying his interests in both mechanical design and metal working in the search for a zero-carbon energy source through nuclear fusion. Although he loved the highly motivating energy in a R&D atmosphere, he wanted to shift his career path into product design and manufacturing. Trevor took on another position on the design team of a local high-tech pharmaceutical equipment manufacturer Vanrx, while spending free time on his other years-long passion: high tech welding. His education, experience and vision for his future all came together when searching for employment closer to home on the North Shore. With resume in hand, Trevor walked through the front door of a young start-up that seemed to magically combine his two passions - high tech mechanical design and welding - and, on January 1st, 2019, Trevor became Employee #12 at Novarc. With the same start-up energy he enjoyed at General Fusion and Vanrx, Novarc was at a pivotal point in its growth and Trevor was charged with building hardware teams, from engineering to manufacturing."We’re an interesting mix of hands-on engineering, design and welding. It’s cutting edge stuff and there’s no gap between tech and engineering. It's a really rewarding work atmosphere.” “Novarc is a great environment. The people here are incredibly knowledgeable. They share a passion that makes it a pleasure to come to work every day. We’re also a unique company in that it's high tech providing solutions for the welding trade and we’ve got a mix of backgrounds and cultures that come together in a very special way. It’s a very collaborative process and it may be a bit complicated but when a customer understands what we can do for them, it’s exciting. At FABTECH for example, when were doing live welding demos, it was amazing to watch people's reaction to seeing the machine weld. It really makes all the hard work of delivering these products worthwhile.” “There are a lot of ways to go career wise at Novarc, but when I can combine my passions for design and welding, it’s my career sweet spot.”
